School of Chemical & Environmental Engineering at China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) (CUMTB) traces its root to the Teaching and Research Office of China Institute of Mining and Technology (CIMT) established in 1952. In 2002, it was renamed School of Chemical & Environmental Engineering. Currently, the school consists of the Department of Mineral Processing Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Department of Carbon Storage Science and Engineering, Laboratory and Analytical Testing Center, and the Administrative Office.

The school has  the “Double First-Class” discipline  (Mining Engineering- Mineral Processing Engineering) at the national level, the national key discipline (Mineral Processing Engineering),  the Beijing municipal key discipline (Environmental Engineering), the Beijing municipal key inter-discipline (Clean Energy Science), the postdoctoral research centers (Mining Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology), the doctoral programs in first-level disciplines (Mineral Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and Technology), the doctoral programs in second-level disciplines (Mineral Processing Engineering, Clean Energy Technology and Engineering, Mineral Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Processing, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Artificial Intelligence, New Energy Science and Engineering, and Carbon Neutral Science and Engineering), the postgraduate programs covering Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Material Science, Energy Science, Artificial Intelligence and Carbon Neutrality, the undergraduate majors (Mineral Processing Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Carbon Storage and Engineering). The three undergraduate programs of Mineral Processing Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Environmental Science and Engineering have been included in the national first-class programs and have obtained the professional certification for engineering education, while the Carbon Storage and Engineering was one of the earliest approved new engineering majors in China. According to the latest data from Essential Science Indicators (ESI), four disciplines constructed by the school, namely, Mineral Engineering (Mineral Processing Engineering), Chemistry, Environment and Ecology, and Material Science which are ranked in the top one percent in the world.

The school has 114 staff members, including 97 full-time teachers, 44 professors, 39 associate professors (including senior engineers), with more than 95 percent staffs holding a doctoral degree. Among them there are 2 National-level Young Talents, 4 selected into the New Century Excellent Talent Support Program, 2 scholars funded by Fok Ying-tung Education Foundation, 2 scholars supported by the CAST Youth Talent Lifting Project, 2 Prestigious Teachers in Beijing, 3 Rising Technology Stars in Beijing, 8 Prestigious Teachers for Ideological and Political Education, 1 Top-notch Youth Talent in Beijing, 2 Outstanding Talents in Beijing, 4 Excellent Talents named by the Organization Department of the Beijing Municipal Committee, 2 Outstanding Party Affair Managers and Outstanding Moral Educators in Beijing, 2 winners of Technology Award by Sun Yueqi Technology Education Foundation,  3 Yueqi Outstanding Scholars, 6 Youth Scholars, 2 Ten-zan Scholars and Grassland Scholars, 1 Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researcher, and 6 scholars listed in the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2023.

At present, the school has more than 2,400 students, including more than 1,100 undergraduates, nearly 1,000 master's students and more than 300 doctoral students. The school adheres to the university motto of “Virtue and Excellence, Diligence and Integrity”, and commits to cultivating high-quality talents with solid theoretical foundation, good practical ability and innovative spirit. In recent years, the awards won by students from the school include Gold Award (nationally) in the 8th China International College Students’ “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, Silver Award (nationally) in the 7th “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, Bronze Award (nationally) in the 7th China Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and Bronze Award (nationally) in the 12th “Challenge Cup”. One of our students won the Influence Award in the 9th “Top 10 Educational Newsmakers", and one was named “The March 8th Red Banner Pacesetter in Fighting Covid-19”, and 2 undergraduate classes were acclaimed as the “Advanced Class in Beijing”, and 1 PhD candidate's dissertation was rated as an excellent doctoral dissertation in Beijing. Taking an active part in promoting industry-university-research integration, the school has established close partnerships with several enterprises and research institutes to provide extensive internship and employment opportunities for the students, with innovation and practice bases constructed in over 20 companies, such as National Energy Group, Mining and Metallurgical Technology Group, Shendong Coal Group, and China Risun Group.

In recent years, the school has achieved exceptional results in both education and research. In terms of education, the school has focused on curriculum reform and innovative teaching, emphasizing the strengthening ideological and political construction. During the last five years, the school have created 2 municipal-level demonstration courses in ideological and political education, 8 university-level excellent demonstration courses in ideological and political education, and 15 university-level demonstration courses in ideological and political education. Meanwhile, one of the teaching achievements has won the First Prize in Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award issued by the Nonferrous Metals Society of China, and one of the teaching achievements has won the First Prize in National Coal Industry. Besides, the school has one municipal-level outstanding teaching team in ideological and political education, one outstanding teaching team in coal industry, and one national-level outstanding teaching team in petroleum and chemical education. In the past five years, the school has received an annual research fund of over 50 million RMB averagely. The teachers in school have won two Second Prizes for National Technological Invention. So far, the school has co-constructed a number of laboratories and research centers, including the National Engineering Laboratory for Efficient Use of Indium Tin Resources (Beijing), the Engineering Technology Innovation Center for High-Purity Quartz Resources Development and Utilization under the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Engineering Technology Research Center for Comprehensive Utilization of Three Rare Resources in Non-ferrous metals industry, the Key Laboratory for Separating and Processing Concomitant Resources in the nonferrous metal industry, and the China-Spain Joint Laboratory of Energy Materials, and the China-Australia Energy Joint Research Center.

In the future, guided by the vision of “build a professional, strong, and superior school” and adhering to the philosophy of “deepen reform, highlight features, improve quality, and achieve innovation-driven development”, the school will continue to embrace clean and efficient coal utilization, low-carbon and intelligent development and utilization of energy resources, and the strategic tasks of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, fully implement the fundamental task of cultivating talents with moral values, advance the construction of “Double First-Class” discipline, and promote the school’s high-quality development. All staffs will strive to build strive toward the goal of building the world-class university of energy science and technology as well as the distinctive school of chemical and environmental engineering.
